Chapter Eleven

“Heath Richards asked me to consider letting him increase my rent. Just so you know, I’m fine with it. I told him I’d think about it and get back with him. I realize I could call him and tell him that, but I understand we need him here,” Bertha said.

“We do. There needs to be something else you can lure him here with besides agreeing to his new rent terns.”

Bertha smiled. “How about if we kill two birds with one stone?”

I had no idea what she was talking about. “Meaning what?”

“I thought we could do something to help out Mr. Richards as well as help the community. I could ask him to stop over so we could discuss this new plan of mine.”

“What exactly are you wanting to do?” She was being rather secretive, even for her.

“How about if we tell him we are planning to have a fundraiser to help with the repairs for his building? If this strip of stores is in danger of closing, as he claims, the whole town will suffer.”

“It will. Frank told me the same thing, so yeah, your idea sounds great. I’m sure the good citizens of Witch’s Cove would be willing to pony up a few bucks to save their town.”

“I’m so glad you’re on board! I know you want to find out who burned down the bookstore, and I want that too, but making sure Heath Richards doesn’t close us first is important.”

“I totally agree. I’ll help anyway I can. I’m sure Aunt Fern, Dolly, Maude, Miriam, and Pearl will do what they can, too. They love to organize things.”

“Thank you. How about I call Mr. Richards and see when he can come over?” Bertha asked.

“Sure, but we need Iggy here, and at the moment he’s with Jaxson to see if either Aaron Reed or Ian Silver have magic.”

“No problem. Once Iggy is free, call me.”

I hugged her. “Will do.”

With that chore complete, I returned to the office to await the results of Jaxson’s investigation. After all of the jobs we’d worked on, I shouldn’t be nervous, but I was, though I couldn’t figure out why. Perhaps it was the thought of something tearing apart this town that petrified me.

I inhaled deeply and gave myself a bit of a pep talk. “Fundraiser, Glinda. Work on Bertha’s fundraiser idea.” I’d actually thought of a few things on the walk back from Hex and Bones and was ready to get started.

I was lucky. The queen of big events was my Aunt Fern. After the potential arsonist was caught, I planned to put all of my energy into making this the best fundraiser this town had ever seen.

First though, Jaxson had to return with Iggy. Once he did, I’d call Bertha to say we were ready. In turn, she would speak with Mr. Richards and let us know when to stop over.

In the meantime, I needed to think about how to raise money—a lot of it. Being spring, the weather would be perfect for a large outdoor event.
